Friday, May 25, 2007, 21:04so i'm back at Laboral where I had to fix poor nOtbOt in the Gameworld show, who got partly blown up when a power surge went through the building. One of the joystick circuits got fried and had to be replaced.
And then I get these emails that apparently, thanks to Yves (see below), i got featured (or nOtbOt did, atleast) on the WeMakeMoneyNotArt blog - which seems to deliver quite some heavy traffic to this place...
So if any of you reading this got linked through and ended up 'ere for some more info; dont worry, nOtbOt is working fine again and will be there at Gameworld for atleast another month. Word is, they might even keep it till september...
Ah well, procrastinating the writing of my final essay for PZI_MDMA is even better (=worse?) in Spain, of course...
Here is some more info about Laboral...
Friday, May 25, 2007, 09:10Yves Bernard just posted a video of nOtbOt from the Gameworld exhib on his blog .
There's also a little txt 'bout it but since my french is a bit rusty i had to get a babelfish:
"In the exposure gameworld, Walter Langelaar (whom I had invited to Art+Game at the end of 2006) proposes nOtbOt: a computer which plays all alone, which does not need more a human player, quasi onanist! Moreover the note invites the visitor to seize the joystick - what very little dares to do obviously (one does not touch a ` oeuvre' posed so well, even in an interactive exposure) - and it is there that one realizes that this joystick is completely and strongly held by the machine, that you have any more any catch and nothing any more to make in this part."
Monday, May 7, 2007, 21:37next week i'll be setting up a small 'game-art' show in the 'Urban Culture' exhibition by Planetart at the Balenfestival in Enschede (NL).
There'll be work on show by Eddo Stern, retroYou, JODI, Julian Oliver and myself + a fine selection of streetart (o.a. Toaky, Nick, State, 711, Jord (Madman) Schoppink, Boris Tellegen, Rizzo, Bfree...), and a good BMX/skatepark especially built for the occasion.
Monday, April 16, 2007, 11:51this on Selectparks :
"Walter Langelaar's n0tb0t antagonises conventions of games as slave to our control. n0tb0t decouples the user-agent from the input chain, leaving just a joystick thrashing about in response to every twist and turn of a bot rampaging through a stock QuakeIII level. My first impression of n0tb0t was of a haunting: an AI that would take no more, fighting back at the input device in an urgent attempt to disenfranchise itself from a history of bondage. What is actually going on however is a little more complex, a feedback loop of sorts where the bot is driven by the input device and the input device by the bot. A nice surprise was to find that Walter was using pix and my q3apd module in the piece to handle messages."

nOtbOt is currently in the Gameworld exhibition at Laboral in Gijon (Spain) for another good two months...some more info about the show here and here, thanks to Julian and Douglas.
Thursday, February 1, 2007, 12:53nOtbOt had to leave the Mediaroom early due to reconstruction work
i'll be showing new work in the new space come summer...

and there's more
Monday, December 4, 2006, 13:38
just returned from ART+GAME and i'm back at PZI...
had a very interesting week, good workshop to start, and a nice exhibition over the weekend. I was in good company, with works like FIJUU, Electroplankton and JODI's latest game-hack ---
and 'q3a_social_ladder' got dubbed "a trashmetal-track of game-art" ( lol Julian ! )...which is a nice compliment in my book, ofcourse :)
thanks to Yves at iMAL for inviting me!
Monday, November 6, 2006, 15:57here's some links to stuff i'm doing in the next few weeks:
this thursday is the launch and lecture night about Ad!dict's latest research theme and Inspirationbook #26 issue GAMING, in which some of my work is featured. The night will be hosted by
SMCS on 11 in Amsterdam.
Then i'll be at the CROSS MEDIA & ALTERNATE REALITY GAMING WORKSHOP, hosted by Cargo New Media Space in Oostende (B), for two weekends in november/december.
Late november/ early december i'm in Brussels again for the ART+GAME workshop at IMAL, which will be led by Julian Oliver.
From the 1st till 5th of december there's also an ART+GAME exhibition at IMAL, in which i'll be showing a new/old work called 'q3a_social_ladder'. An update on this'll be available shortly...
Monday, October 16, 2006, 10:37added a static page for nOtbOt, check the sidebar under projects - or click here
Thursday, September 21, 2006, 12:36finally got around to getting some code snippets to embed lil' flash movies in here...so for testing purposes, here's nOtbOt in action:
Monday, September 11, 2006, 19:41here's a pic of what i'm currently working on; i call it 'nOtbOt'.
It's an old Logitech force-feedback joystick, slightly modified to create 'dada-machinima' which will be shown at the GOGBOT-festival later this week...
messy soldering still...
I control the force-feedback servo's from within PD, and send the output of the potentiometers to another machine (through a joystick interface), which is running a videogame. The data generated by the virtual game-player is sent back to the first machine running PD, and is then hooked back up to the stick....creating a (force)feedback loop.
The feedback loop can be viewed as an automated player (bot, NPC) possessing rather crude artificial intelligence; it responds to it's own movements and it's virtual surroundings, yet the result is completely irratic behaviour : )
Future nOtbOts will have Artificial Neural Nets (ANN's) which provide for more interaction with exhibition visitors, hopefully resulting in more strange behaviour on both sides..
